Varhany kostela sv. Mořice

Baroque organ in the church of St. Morice in Olomouc

The largest organ in the Czech Republic and Central Europe.
The history of the church goes back to the distant past of the 13th century. More about the church of St. Morice can be found here.

A fire in the church in 1709 destroyed the entire interior inventory. Therefore, it was also necessary to build a new organ.
In 1729, the construction of the choir and the main organ began. The construction was undertaken by the Olomouc organist Josef Emanuel Heintzler, who, however, died seven years after the work began. The well-known organist Michael Engler from Wrocław was entrusted with the completion. The decoration of the organ cabinet is the work of Olomouc sculptors Filip Sattler and Jan Antonín Richter. This resulted in an absolutely unprecedented instrument, the largest in Moravia at the time (3 manuals, 44 registers and approx. 2,500 pipes).
In total, the organ, including the construction of the choir, cost 19,000 guilders. The new organ played for the first time on the eve of St. Moritz's feast day on September 21, 1745 and was thus put into use. Over the following years, the technical condition of the organ deteriorated. In the fifties of the 20th century, it was decided to reconstruct them.
Major repairs and modernization of the organ took place in the 1960s. century. Due to their poor condition, it was decided to reconstruct them, which took place between 1959 and 1971 by the company Rieger-Kloss from Krnov. The instrument has been expanded many times over, but in such a way that there was as little interference with the original organ as possible. This restoration further increased the expressive musical possibilities of the classical baroque instrument, which today therefore has 5 manuals, 95 registers and 7884 pipes.
Recently, it was decided to further reconstruct and modernize them. We were there with the camera.
